{Skirt for Work}

Islamic clothing, modest clothing, muslim fashion, and islamic fashion are all words that hijabis use. What is a hijabi? It is a Muslim woman (usually) who wears hijab. But it also is spelled hegab, hijab, higab, and hejab.scarf: muslimbase. blazer: gianna's closet. tunic: old navy. skirt: tall and all. bracelet: ylang 23. bag: michael kors. pumps: vanity.

{Do You Call It Dating?}

Muslim relationships and Islamic relationships are dealt with in Muslim Magazines for women.This isn't related to fashion but it does fit into the scope of Her Modesty Magazine...

Growing up we used the word "courting" for dating and "intended" for fiancé. I'm not sure if these words are universal in the Islamic-American world... So If you don't call it "dating", what do you call it? And if you wouldn't call him your fiancé, what would you call him?

***Just a quick note: It's apparent that some of you think that in the above post, I was implying that Muslims are allowed to date in the sense that we can have boyfriends/girlfriends and all of that. But that's definitely not what I was saying at all. The question that I was trying to ask is that during the time period that you're getting to know a brother for the purpose of marriage, what do you call that period? I'm sure that most of you don't use the word "dating", so I was curious to know what word you use. In the same vein, I wanted to know what some of you call the man that you are planning to marry? Do you call him "The Brother That I'm Planning To Marry" or do you simply call him your "Fiancé"? I know some sisters who use that word and other's who do not. I'm sure that we all know that "dating" in the typical sense of the word is un-Islamic and that being alone with a man who is not your husband is forbidden. But the scope of this question isn't about any of that, so I'm sorry if it confused any of you... :)

{Are You Modest No Matter What?}

If you wear hijab, you've probably been asked at some point: "Why do you wear that thing on your head?" The easy, short answer is that you do it for religious reasons, but what if you didn't have to dress modestly? Would you still dress the way that you do?

Me? I think that I would because I can't imagine going outside in a tank top & shorts, a mini-skirt, or a bikini! Maybe I'm biased from dressing this way all of my life, but what about you?

{Pretty Pictures}

I have been trying to figure out the source of these photos for a while and I finally figured it out! They are from a magazine called Bon Magazine. Unfortunately, it's not a Muslim fashion magazine... I guess they just ran an article on Islamic fashion or hijab styles. Not so excited about all the skin in the 3rd pic but aren't the scarves lovely though?

{Dhul-Hijjah 1, 1428}

Asalamualaykum my lovely readers!

You may have seen this floating around the web lately, but I wanted to post it here as well in case you haven't seen it. Today is the first day of Dhul-Hijjah and I hope you all will click here for information about the virtues of these blessed 10 days.

These are the best 10 days of the Islamic calendar and there is great benefit for acts of worship during this time even for those of us who are not making Hajj this year. Some of the important things to do this month include fasting on the 9th day of Dhul-Hijjah, dhikr, and repenting to Allah.

Please check out the full article for more details and I pray that we all receive as many blessings as possible during this auspicious time.

{Get The Look}

Shop the pages of Her Modesty's Muslim Fashion Magazine to buy Islamic clothing that is modern and chic.I'm not a huge fan of super-wide palazzo pants, but I think this look is really chic. You can buy the entire outfit at spiegel.com for about $150 or shop around to get the look for less.

{Islamic Clothing Q&A}

I love islamic clothing styles that are modern and modest. I love Her Modesty's Islamic clothing and Muslim fashion magazine too!Q. How can I wear a skirt for work without looking too feminine?

A. What's so bad about looking feminine? :) To answer your question, "skirt" doesn't necessarily equal ultra-fem, especially when you add structured pieces to complete your outfit. I'd suggest wearing a nice jacket in a menswear inspired fabric like the tweed jacket above. Finish off the look with a structured bag and a simple hijab style for no-fuss modesty.

{Deener Denim Trench Coat}

I love Muslim Fashion. Magazines are cool and Islamic clothing is the best at Her ModestyMy fashion favorite, Stacy London, gave away this Deener Denim trench coat tonight on her new talk show, Fashionably Late. I love this trench! It has a sophisticated long and lean style without being tight. Plus you can wear it with just about anything! Now I'm on the lookout for a comparable one and here's what I've found so far...

I love Islamic clothing as seen in Her Modesty - America's Muslim Fashion Magazine!This denim trench [at right] is by Guess Factory. While it does feature some of the same style elements as the Deener trench, it's not as long, it's a bit tight, and worse yet, it's not in my size! So, I'll just have to keep on looking... Which one do you like best?

{Islamic Fashion - Iranian Style}

"Iranian designers fuse international and European fashion with traditional Iranian styles, breathing new life into Islamic fashion in Iran."

{Peplum vs. Babydoll}

Muslim Fashion Magazines are few around the world. Her Modesty is the only Muslim Fashion Magazine in America!The new Anthropologie catalog features this pretty yellow peplum jacket. Some people use peplum and baby doll to describe the same style of clothing, however, they are slightly different.

What's the difference? Baby doll styles have a seam right under the bust and flare down towards the hem. Peplum styles have a seam at or below the waist and flare down from there.

Which one should you choose? If you have a larger bust, you may want to try peplum style pieces to avoid emphasizing your chest the way baby doll pieces do. If you have large hips, a baby doll top would do well to camouflage your shape, where as a peplum may make it look larger. And when in doubt, just try it on.

{Mock Cover}

Thanks for all of your feedback on our masthead font. It's been a work in progress because I'm a perfectionist. But, we've found one that we really love... It's bold, feminine, sophisticated and pretty... Just like Her Modesty.

So, check it out. Not everyone will like everything, but I hope you like it because that's our font and we're sticking to it!! :)

{Makeup}

For Islamic clothing, modest make-up, and muslim fashion, magazine's like Her Modesty are it!As a fashion magazine, Her Modesty will also include beauty features. Here's a look that I absolutely love! Kelly's look features a reddish-brown glossy lip and some gold liner around the eyes.

To me, this is a great example of how we can wear makeup in an understated, polished way. What do you think?

{Get The Look}

Islamic Clothing is hot in this Muslim fashion magazine! I buy Islamic clothing and shop for modern Islamic clothing there all the time!I love the combination of an ivory sweater with a dark jean and a silver shoe.

To make it modest, I chose a sweater-dress and a closed-toe metallic pump (since it's getting cold out!). Finish off the look with a silver pashmina to match the color of the shoes and the weight of the dress...

Buy Islamic clothing and Muslim fashion magazine subscriptions here.This is an ideal suited look for Muslimahs. It features a maxi-skirt (long black skirt), a cropped jacket, and a long sleeve top underneath.

To make this outfit even more modest (especially if you're curvy), I would suggest a swing style jacket because it fits the body more loosely...

So here's how to get the look:

Designer modest clothing by Kenzie. Long skirts are inherently modest. Clothing doesn't have to be skimpy to be cute!

{Almost Perfect}

This outfit is a bit too fitted in my opinion, but I love the idea of it and the black/purple color combination. What say you?

{Muslim Fashion Magazine Updates}

So, inshallah I plan to post about the different stages involved in creating this Muslim fashion magazine. But, first I'd like to thank you sisters for the support (i.e. the subscriptions)! My sisters and I are actually putting the magazine together and I'd like to introduce you to them over the next week.

First up, I'll introduce you to me. As you know my name is Kima, but you may not have seen a picture of me before... So, here I am! I am a student, a wife, a mother, and most importantly a Muslimah.

I started Her Modesty (formerly, Precious Modesty) because I wanted to become a fashion designer of Islamic clothing - which is still a goal of Her Modesty as a brand. The concept actually came to me a little over a year ago, but at the time, I was not prepared to launch a collection. So, last winter, I started this blog and since then a lot of things have happened (good things!) that have lead to the creation of the first US-based fashion magazine for Muslimahs!

My goal with Her Modesty is to display how sisters can be covered but yet still feel good about themselves and how they look. All of the pictures will feature hijab - although we know that some sisters don't wear it. We just feel that it's important to present a magazine that is truely about the covered modern woman. It will be unlike any other Muslim magazine that you've seen. And I can't tell you why because... well you know! Inshallah, when you get your mag in January, you'll see exactly what I mean. :)

{Shukr's Winter Collection}

Last week, Shukr launched its new Winter collection which features a lot of corduroy and some of the fabulous embroidery that I'm growing to love! I'm sure that this is just the first installment of what they're coming with for next season, but here are a few hits and misses:

Hits:
Soft Cotton Dress

Long Cotton Hooded Tunic

Misses:
Cotton Pullover

Flared Double Inverted Pleat Skirt

{Shopping at MANA}

So, MANA held it's very first convention over the last 3 days. It was nice, alhamdulillah. You can check out more about the organization at their website: mana-net.org.

On to the fashion of it all! There weren't any Muslim fashion designers there (unless I missed them) but there were some importers and I was so excited to find this one sister who had abayas from Dubai. I may be a little obsessed with
Dubai abayas, but the pictures that I have seen of them are so pretty and I really wanted one.

Anyhoo... I actually bought 2 abayas (each came with a matching scarf) for only $35 each! Now, this is amazing to me because every nice abaya that I have seen over in Philly or Jersey City costs around $50-$60. The brands are Al-Karam which is from Jordan and Lahai from Dubai! Inshallah, I'll take pictures of them because they are really nice.

I also purchased 2 mesh-type scarves for $5 each. One is an animal-print with lace and the other is black with gold sequins. The sister that I bought all of this from has an online shop called
Middle East Fashion. She is from Florida, so she came all the way up to Philadelphia for the convention and I'm really glad she did... Check out her online shop and if you are looking for something more specific, you can call her directly.
